What was the desktop environment you were using and what version of Ubuntu?
I seemed to miss that part of the thread.

Unity can be a pain sometimes with LO. Mate has no issues at all, if I make sure I install the desktop menus correctly. I deal with Ubuntu 12.04 LTS and how that 14.04 LTS will work the same way with MATE as 12.04LTS.

Yes there are a few "quirks" with LO. I sometimes get them due to the fact that I have over 400 font files installed that count as over 900 fonts and their styles [normal, bold, italic, bold-italic, condensed, etc.]. Sometimes LO does not like to show or access all of the fonts, depending on the version I am trying. 4.0.6 works fine, but I have not tried 4.1.4 yet.

Hi Tom:

I had thought about doing that, but discovered that it was difficult to
reproduce consistently. So, for the moment, I'm chalking it up to some as
yet undiscovered "quirk," such as memory limitations or similar. I'll
re-post if I find that I can pin it down to where it can be reproduced
without fail. It's just odd, though.
