I think the point is that the users will get confused with too many options.
I agree that for a beginner (or someone transitioning from another program)
it might be confusing.

It would really be nice if LO offered an alternative interface to allow new
users to get acquainted to the programs they are used to and eventually
"switch" to the whole suite (even though it was there all the time)

It is highly likely that there is a far better way to make presentations
than either PowerPoint or Impress.  


Abiword is nice and light but it is not on the same league as Writer
(depending on the user requirements, obv) but to my knowledge there is no
standalone Open Source presentation program available.

The nearest you can get  is a standalone Freeware ;)
