It is reasonable, well founded advice, particularly for the presentation formats.

On topic: Yes, I have several PowerPoint presentations that are presentable in both programs.

Since Impress is smaller, simplier than PowerPoint. It is logical that it can not support the same set of features in the same way as the more complex software. The compatibility goes exactly the other way round. The simple ppt you created in this program should be OK in the other program. If you happen to run Windows and all you need is viewing PP presentations you can install the free PowerPoint viewer from the Microsoft Office home page.
