I have no insight into what Microsoft folks think of the OpenOffice.org -> 
Apache license grant by Oracle.  The ones I know are aware of it. 


There is overlap among contributors at the Apache project and on LibreOffice.  
No one at Apache tells their contributors where they cannot (nor must) 
contribute. 


A little fact-checking:

1. The Oracle grant was announced on June 1.  The Apache OpenOffice.org 
incubator podling was approved at Apache on June 13.

2. The transfer is not complete at this time.  The podling is working at how to 
move repositories, http://openoffice.org, etc. preceding a review of the IP 
provenance of everything.  They are also working on making sure that they have 
clear agreement on what the Oracle grant covers.

There have been two monthly status reports (scroll down to OpenOffice.org in the 
alphabetical list of reports):

3. While there is an announced intention to contribute some source code of IBM 
Lotus Symphony, that has not happened at this point and it probably won't until 
we're clear on (2).  An Apache ODF Toolkit podling was recently approved and 
will receive the code of the ODF Toolkit Union for starters, 
<http://incubator.apache.org/projects/odftoolkit.html>.  This is an independent 
podling at this point.  The mailing lists aren't up just yet.  


4. I didn't know, until I started working on Apache projects in June, that there 
is an Apache POI Top Level Project (TLP) which is producing a Java API for 
Microsoft Documents <http://poi.apache.org/>.

Oracle managed to mishandle OOo so badly that they couldn't "monetise it".  
Apparently IBM pushed Oracle into donating OOo to The Apache Foundation a few 
weeks ago.  


There are Apache people in TDF (and some TDF in Apache) lists to help the 2 
projects work together more closely and people are now allowed to work in both 
again.  It's  bit weird because Oracle is not particularly close to Apache so 
it's possible they were attempting to hamper Apache by giving them a "poisoned 
pawn".  I don't think Oracle were expecting Apache to suddenly work with TDF, 
effectively draining the poison and making OOo much more viable.  Then IBM 
donated a lot of their Lotus code to Apache making OOo even more viable.  
OpenSource co-operative competition between projects beat the proprietary 
mind-set again.  


Most MS people are probably very unaware of these rapid changes that have taken 
place in the last few weeks so they probably do think they are fighting 
"Oracle's OOo" by suggesting LibreOffice instead.  Still, it's probably best not 

to inform them because they seldom appreciate being given better intel 
especially if it's not directly from MS.

There's a good possibility the LO recommendation being due to the Gates - 
Ellison feud.  Ellison owns Oracle. Oracle owns OO.  Most know more about OO 
then they do LO.  Hence the reason for MS's LO recommendation. Then there's the 
900lb Gorilla factor:  LO is cost free.  OO looks like it's going to be a for 
$$$ item at Oracle.
